"Learn to limit yourself, to content yourself with some definite thing, and some definite work; dare to be what you are, and learn to resign with a good grace all that you are not and to believe in your own individuality." "Life is short, and we have never too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are traveling the dark journey with us. Oh be swift to love, make haste to be kind." It was in the last days of December, 1882, that the first volume of Henri Fr�d�ric Amiel's "Journal Intime" was published at Geneva. The book, of which the general literary world knew nothing prior to its appearance, contained a long and remarkable Introduction from the pen of M. Edmond Scherer, the well-known French critic, who had been for many years one of Amiel's most valued friends, and it was prefaced also by a little Avertissement, in which the "Editors"--that is to say, the Genevese friends to whom the care and publication of the Journal had been in the first instance entrusted--described in a few reserved and sober words the genesis and objects of the publication. Some thousands of sheets of Journal, covering a period of more than thirty years, had come into the hands of Amiel's literary heirs. "They were written," said the Avertissement, "with several ends in view. Amiel recorded in them his various occupations, and the incidents of each day. He preserved in them his psychological observations, and the impressions produced on him by books. But his Journal was, above all, the confidant of his most private and intimate thoughts; a means whereby the thinker became conscious of his own inner life; a safe shelter wherein his questionings of fate and the future, the voice of grief, of self-examination and confession, the soul's cry for inward peace, might make themselves freely heard.

About the Author
Henri Frederic Amiel (27 September 1821 – 11 May 1881) was a Swiss philosopher, poet and critic. Born in Geneva in 1821, he was descended from a Huguenot family driven to Switzerland by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. After losing his parents at an early age, Amiel travelled widely, became intimate with the intellectual leaders of Europe, and made a special study of German philosophy in Berlin. In 1849 he was appointed professor of aesthetics at the academy of Geneva, and in 1854 became professor of moral philosophy. These appointments, conferred by the democratic party, deprived him of the support of the aristocratic party, which comprised nearly all the culture of the city. This isolation inspired the one book by which Amiel is still known, the Journal Intime ("Private Journal"), which, published after his death, obtained a European reputation. It was translated into English by Mary A. Ward at the instigation of Mark Pattison. Although modest in volume of output, Amiel's mind was of no inferior quality, and his Journal gained a sympathy that the author had failed to obtain in his life. In addition to the Journal, he produced several volumes of poetry and wrote studies on Erasmus, Madame de Stael and other writers. He died in Geneva.

Leo Tolstoy had THIS book on his nightstand.

This book is for the discriminating reader that appreciates virtue. I could never do it justice in these brief words. I love this work and I am very grateful that it came to be. It almost didn't since it was published after Amiel's death, by his friends to whom Amiel left his work. A very personal and beautiful journal, full of wonderful insights into Life, the nature of things, the human condition, etc. I love Amiel. What an honest man.

great book. If you read rimbaud, baudelaire, etc.

They were contemporaries. The copy I read was a first edition printed in 1897; it's a tiny book that almost looks like an old bible. The pages are goldlined, with a leather cover, and it's small enough (3.5 inches x 4 inches) to slide in your back pocket. The typeface is so small (font size 6? font size 4?) i could barely read it. I won't spoil it for you but it's certainly worth reading, and although as a diary, it was never meant for publication, nietzsche� for example, read amiel. There are, incidentally, two books. Amiel's Journal Intime volume I and volume II.

Good but with Significant Gaps

Jerry L. Campbell's "FW 190 in Action" has strong coverage of the BMW 801-powered Fw 190A, F, and G models but oddly does not cover the DB 603-powered B and C, Jumo 213-powered D, or Ta 152 models. For those models covered, there is a strong attention to detail with emphasis on the A-1 through A-8 models, including technical differences and brief operational history. The book is loaded with photographs, two three-view line drawings, a page of color paintings, and illustrations. Strangely, technical specifications are lacking as dimensions and weights are listed but performance data is completely absent. Overall, this is not a bad source for info on early versions of one of the Luftwaffe's top fighters but for the complete story one must look elsewhere.

Homeward Highway by Lewis B. Hunter follows the travels of Lester Eugene Oliver. The day his wife leaves him for another man propels Lester into an emotional dive. Never an extrovert, his pride suffers a hit below the belt, and he quickly realizes his life no longer appeals to him. Change is demanded, but he feels inadequate to determine what he should do. The day comes when he takes a step totally alien to him. He leaves everything behind, buys a Harley, and takes off with no particular destination planned. He just wants out! He wants to get rid of the awful empty feeling of unworthiness.

His journey leads him into various situations, some precarious and all amidst very colorful characters. Each one shows him a life that he could easily take on and those to avoid. What he learns along the way is that his life still has value, and he needs to determine where his trust should be given. He becomes more comfortable the further he travels, and eventually succumbs to a need to be back, to reconnect with his daughters at least.

Initially reading this story, I felt it was a book that only a male would enjoy. There are some segments where morals slide. However, the journey is not only for Lester to travel because the reader comes to know him too. Perhaps, like me, you will find him very likable and his inevitable choice of new friends is very acceptable. Lots of Southern charm, along with characters that would force anyone to make rapid decisions to keep their self-respect and values intact. A good story with some mature scenes and language.

Well written. Could be called The Journey of Self Discovery. The author knows motorcycles and touring. The people Leo meets along the way are mostly friendly and helpful, just like most of the people you meet on an actual tour. They are also interesting if you take the time like Leo did to listen to them.
I really liked the way the author described many of the roads that Leo traveled. I've been on many of them and the descriptions were accurate enough to bring back memories. The plot wasn't fantastic but it was believable and was low key overall with just enough excitement thrown in to keep things moving. Its easy to get into this book and just enjoy the ride.

I started out a little skeptical about the book because I have never rode a motor bike on a long trip. It became more interesting as each time I read greater lengths. Soon I became the character " Leo " and I could not put it down until I had finished the book. It was a great read that helped me understand some troubling parts of my life.

I found this to be a very enjoyable and enlightening book. The characters are easy to relate to, and the main character Leo quickly becomes someone you identify with as he takes a long look at his past. I enjoyed the way the author makes some very reflective insights into who we are and how we became the people we are. Those realizations are perfectly balanced with humor and humility in the nature of the main character and the friends he made as he found himself on the journey. This turned out to be far more than a book about a motorcycle journey. It was a journey into the adventure of discovering yourself and how to allow yourself to relax and make the most of your relationships with family and friends.

Long overdue, and long awaited COMPLETE encyclopedia of ALL the TREK universe!!!

WOW. I had the original in the 1990s, But this one is hardback and contains EVERYTHING TREK!
Total 1056 pages! 2 volumes, 3"x9"x12". Weight: 12 lbs.

So VERY comprehensive! Put together by the Graphics masters of all the 1990s Star Trek, "the Okudas!"

I know it is currently $88, but if you like anything Star Trek at all, or have a loved one that does,
GET THIS, you and they will LOVE IT!!!...:)

It's like Wikipedia only on paper!

Describing the book using the selection choices for fiction is difficult to use when it's a fictional reference book.

None the less with the existence of the internet and the online "Star Trek Encyclopedia" wiki/a known as "Memory Alpha" which has incredible sources of information, recaps of episodes, and BTS info a book-set like this seems quaint. But it works very, very nicely. To begin with the thing is massive, weighing a combined 13 lbs the two books are 1.125 inches thick a piece inside a box that itself is an eighth of an inch thick all around. The book has that "reference book smell" common to the type of high-quality, treated, paper used in them. Nice, glossy, pages with easily readable text and high-quality images comprised of both screen caps from the episodes/movies, illustrations of the ships, aliens, clothing, technology and such and large reference tables for the planets, species and numerous other things that make up all of the Star Trek universe.

An utter trove of information that's just neat to have in a hard, physical, form.

The set encompasses all of Star Trek's 50 years of canonical film and television productions through the 2013's Star Trek: Into Darkness. though the book does make some tangential references to 2016's Star Trek: Beyond and the planned series set to be released in the next couple years. The information referencing events in the movies since 2009's "Star Trek" is called out as being part of "The Kelvin Timeline" to distinguish its events and information from the "Prime Timeline" that makes up the bulk of the Star Trek universe for the last 50 years.

Massive book, and lots of information. Needed in a world with Wikis and such? Probably not, but there's something about having a physical copy of something that was created by two heroes in the Star Trek fandom, being a huge part of Star Trek since The Next Generation, in Michael and Denise Okuda.

In the reviews/ratings on this page mostly mention older versions of the Star Trek Encyclopedia books that came out years ago; hard to relate them at all to this release.

Comparing the New (2016) Edition with the Previous Ones

I received my copy of the latest (2016) edition of The Star Trek Encyclopedia today. I own the previous three editions and, after looking over this revised and expanded version, I can make a few observations about how it compares to its predecessors.

First of all, you are getting a huge amount of additional material as this edition covers the rest of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager as well as the entirety of Star Trek: Enterprise and the three movies since the prior edition (Nemesis, Star Trek (2009), and Star Trek Into Darkness). There are no articles concerning material from Star Trek Beyond (2016), though, which sort of makes the book already out of date. But I don't mind, both because I'm not crazy about the Kelvin Timeline movies and because a book about an ongoing franchise is bound to have trouble keeping up.

As to the material about the Kelvin Timeline, I was surprised to find it integrated into the body of the encyclopedia. The early press release about this edition seemed to suggest that the "Abrams Trek" material would be contained in an Appendix section, separate from the other entries. Instead, Kelvin material is found alongside Prime Timeline stuff, but with separate, parallel articles differentiated by a dot after the entry name. For instance, there are separate entries for "Spock" (prime timeline) and "Spock*" (Kelvin Timeline).

The encyclopedia is beautifully laid out inside, although the text is smaller than the prior edition. Illustrations are more numerous and sometimes new. For example, every one of the entries about episodes is accompanied by a picture from the episode. Many of the diagrams of starships have been updated to a CGI-looking image which better captures subtle textures and lighting effects than the older illustrations. The "Remastered" version of The Original Series makes its presence felt as images of ships we never saw in the original version of the show (like Harry Mudd's ship) are illustrated with the remastered series' designs.

As to the level of detail in the articles, I noticed that articles about more recent Trek productions (such as Enterprise and the reboot movies) were longer and more in-depth (perhaps irritatingly so) than entries about earlier productions, which are mainly holdovers from the earlier editions. Like the previous editions, you will find appendices (at the end of Volume Two) for Federation/Earth Ships, Ships of the Galaxy, timelines of historical events in the Trek universe and of Star Trek production, Writer and Director Credits for all Trek TV episodes and movies except Beyond and The Animated Series (there are also no encyclopedia entries about TAS, which is not considered canon), and a Cast Appendix. Absent from this edition, however, is the appendix of production personnel, which the previous two editions included. This was slightly disappointing. Also, the appendices showing the different Federation/Earth ships and ships of the galaxy no longer show the illustrations at approximate scale. This is a plus or a minus depending on how you look at it.

In sum, this is a great reference for fans of Star Trek. It doesn't have entries for *everything* in Trek (I couldn't find the alien race called the "Harada" mentioned in TNG or "Admiral Fitzpatrick" from "The Trouble with Tribbles."), but it has enough!

About the Author
Thuken Losang Chokyi Nyima (1737-1802) was among the most cosmopolitan and prolific Tibetan Buddhist masters of the late eighteenth century. Hailing from the "melting pot" region of Amdo, he was Mongol by heritage, and educated in Gelukpa monasteries. Throughout his life, he traveled widely in east and inner Asia, spending significant time in Central Tibet, Amdo, inner Mongolia, and at the Qing court in Beijing. He served as abbot of several important monasteries, and wrote hundreds of texts on Buddhist thought and practice, the most enduring and influential of which is the Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems.

Born in the Tsang region of Tibet in 1923, Geshe Lhundub Sopa is both a spiritual master and a respected academic. He rose from a humble background to complete his geshe studies at Sera Je Monastic University in Lhasa with highest honors and was privileged to serve as a debate opponent for the Dalai Lama's own geshe examination in 1959. He moved to New Jersey in the United States in 1963 and in 1967 began teaching in the Buddhist Studies Program at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is now professor emeritus. In 1975, he founded the Deer Park Buddhist Center in Oregon, Wisconsin, site of the Dalai Lama's first Kalachakra initiation granted in the West. He is the author of several books in English, including the five-volume comprehensive teaching, Steps on the Path to Englightenment.

Roger R. Jackson is the John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Religion at Carleton College in Minnesota, where he teaches the religions of South Asia and Tibet. He has published many articles on the philosophy, ritual, meditative practices, and poetry of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, and has written or co-edited several books, including Is Enlightenment Possible?, Tibetan Literature, Buddhist Theology, Tantric Treasures, and Mahamudra and the Bka' brgyud Tradition. He is a past editor of the Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies, and is currently co-editor of the Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies.

A Treasure

This is another wonderful addition to this translation project. I have two other volumes in this series: Mind Training & The Book of Kadam (see links below). None of these books is the kind I can read right through. Mind Training is a compilation of teachings on Exchanging Self and Other. This is lifetime practice, so the book is not something to read, but an anthology of practices.

The Crystal Mirror is an 18th Century encyclopedic guide to Tibetan and other Asian philosophies. It has a lot of information I'm not interested in as well as a great deal I want to know. It is well produced. It has an excellent index. I have used it to look into areas where I have questions - Mahamudra, for instance. It is clear and concise. I found out why Amulet Mahamudra has that name. Its two parts fit together like the front and back of an amulet box (gau). I have had instruction that did not include this explanation. I also found out that Mahamudra includes a range of things and is not just one teaching.

This is a book I already treasure and I am sure its value to me will grow over the years.

Excellent book

The library of tibetan classics has put together a commendable collection of texts. The cristal mirror of philosophical systems offers a thorough view of buddhism in Asia with particualr emphasis in the tibetans shcools of buddhism. It is a must for any serious student of buddhism in general and tibetan buddhism in particualar. I find it particularly useful for a person deciding which school of buddhism to join. It has ample notes, a rich glossary and a fair analytical index. It is most auspicious that the Hersey family foundation is supporting this effort and making the tibetan classics available to a wider audience.

I believe the author thought he was being unbiased

but somehow he concludes that:
- The Jonangpas are crypto-Hindus (Samkhya), not really Buddhist
- The Kagyus are in decline
- The Sakyas have been great, but are in decline
- The Nyingmas have had great practitioners in the past, but their methods may not be so suitable for today's lesser people...

In other words, only the Gelugpas have the fully unerring system for the Dharma in Tibet. Guess what? He's a Gelugpa.

Of course, this is a snapshot as of about 1800; but still, I think his descriptions are highly flavored by his opinion as to the best school for presenting the Dharma.

I got this book mostly for a Tibetan view of how the Dharma spread in the rest of Asia. It's interesting to get that view.

It's an interesting book, I'm sure it's written with great sincerity, and I don't regret buying it. But don't expect a fair comparison of the different schools of Tibetan Buddhism. If you want to understand the different traditions, read further and visit centers from the different lineages.

Fascinating Chinese Folktales

This book is a good collection of Chinese folktales and ghost stories. It's an older translation, which glosses over or censors some things a newer translation would include, which I would normally disapprove of, but it made it so I could read "The Painted Skin" without gagging, and the old-fashioned prose gives the stories an elegance and romanticism I'm not sure a fresher translation would quite equal. This translation also includes some beautiful Chinese paintings. I highly recommend "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio," in whatever translation, for fans of Chinese literature and culture.

The book "Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur" is one of the best books I have read on the subject of learning to play chess. The senior author, Max Euwe, was not only a World Champion but was also a scholar and prolific author. He writes very well and with great authority. He, and his coauthor, Walter Meiden show the reader step-by-step the many mistakes amateur players make and the way master players recognize and respond to those mistakes. The book begins with analyses of games in which the amateur player is very weak, moves through games with stronger amateurs, and ends with games against expert or near expert players. Throughout the book the authors show the reader how the amateurs' mistakes were exploited by the master player. This is a very instructive book.

what better way to beat other amateurs? and beyond.

i bought this book 3 months ago and have enjoyed it very much. some readers have brought up how it uses old openings, but i think that is beyond the point. this book will teach you how to look for the better moves, and explains to you why certain moves are weak. I play alot of games at yahoo and i cannot tell you how many times i see alot of positions that my competitors use as examples on this book! i went from being 20 games below the .500 mark to 15 games above!! from a 1200 rating to 1490!! i know its only yahoo, but hey its a start!! i do occasinally run into guys who are into the latest openings, and they do give me a scare in the begining, but after a while i do give a good fight, and have been pretty succesfull lately. this is the perfect "first book of chess" or if you only wanted one book this would be it.

Instructive Games to learn from

This is one of the best game collection books for a lower rated chess player. Typical types of mistakes made by weaker players are taken advantage of by stonger players (masters). This is a good way to learn what not to do and how to take advantage of typical mistakes made by the opponents you are likely to play. This is very good instruction by using games (also falling into this catagory are "Unbeatable Chess Lessons" and "Logical Chess" - also recommended reading!). There are some mistakes and typos, but not a lot. And it is not in algebraic chess notation. For these two reasons I give it four instead of five stars.
