Readable and Enjoyable

The Past in Perspective is a book on human and cultural evolution designed for undergraduates with no previous work in archaeology (xx). So, this will introduce plenty of new words in bold font, but usually have them defined for you in the context, either directly or indirectly. There were only a couple of words where I didn't feel it did this. PiP will introduce the human story of evolution essentially to the layman or amateur, then. Though it is technically an archaeology textbook, it didn't quite seem like it. Feder's writing flows well and it's very readable. There are tons of helpful pictures, diagrams, graphs and charts that will help give a picture to what is often being discussed in the text.

All in all, this is probably the most readable and enjoyable archaeological textbook I have read (not that I've read a ton, but I have read a few). As I said, this one didn't quite *seem* like a textbook. Feder is capable of bringing difficult issues in the archaeological record and translating them so most readers can understand. He also has a good ability at being fair when comparing and contrasting intra-mural debates within archaeology or anthropology. I paid around eighty dollars for this a few years ago and now it looks like you can get it for practically nothing. Guess that's the way textbooks go. I would still recommend this edition if you don't want to pay so much for the newest one.

Very Good for More than Just Prehistory

Surprisingly, this book is very casual and doesn't overwhelm you with facts and information that you'll helplessly reread a thousand times before understanding what the author is talking about. The downside to that is students who are already well versed in anthropology and its subdisciplines may feel the book is oversimplified and contains a lot of fluff. Books with a lot of fluff do not belong in a reference book collection, but they're a great introduction to the field. Just a word of caution, some of the information in this book is simplified to the point where it's bordering on incorrect. For instance, it has a picture of the human skeleton and shows what ages epiphyses fuse with the diaphyses to estimate age, however, it gives a single number instead of a range, and fails to specify whether the skeleton is male or female. An age range (which can be population specific) accounts for individual variation and ages of fusion vary by sex as well. However, as I said, this is to be somewhat expected because this book is a simplified INTRODUCTION to anthropology with a focus on archaeology and prehistory.

I gave it 4/5 stars given its intended use.

Another home run for Feder.

Great book for the novice archaeologist or if you're just interested in easy to ready and understand Human Pre-History. This is the second book I've read by Ken Feder and have found his writings very easy and smooth ready. He has a great sense of humor and incorporates it throughout. As I read his works I regret not having applied myself more, in my early years, and considered archaeology as a career or hobby, I might have it I'd read him sooner. Feder makes archaeology and human pre-hisory so interesting. You can't go wrong getting your hands on any of his books.

The Call to Teach

I first read this book in college when I was studying to become a teacher. Herbert Kohl's story of his journey as a teacher is inspiring. His narrative about his "calling to teach" describes in great detail the dedication of a superb teacher. I have reread the book several times and often give it as a gift to other teachers. Another book about the inspiring role of the teacher is "The Last Barrier" by Reshad Feild. Both books touch both the heart and the soul as they reveal that the teacher is, in fact, merely a student himself.

Neither practical nor believable

Although I think that some of Mr. Kohl's advice is good, the stories he tells about being a teacher ring false. Examples of student work seem overcoached and disingenuous.
Mr. Kohl proposes an almost mystical teaching method which does not involve a set curriculum or lesson plans but instead relies on a teacher allowing student creativity to guide the flow of classroom learning. Mr. Kohl rejects the idea that specific topics should be taught to children in favor of an unstructured learning environment in which elementary school children explore on their own with only occasional guidance from the teacher.
Although there is nothing inherently wrong with this idea, it seems that it would require rather idealized conditions to work. Mr. Kohl seems to have achieved these conditions, according to the stories he tells in the book. He gives examples of sixth graders constructing the natural numbers using set notation, complete with curly braces and a capital lambda. He includes entire stories, supposedly written by fourth graders, which include paragraphs like: "Minnie looked at her mother's slim figure in the doorway, 'Yes, Ma,' she said gloomily". This story contained the caption "Will Minnie win Harper?" and included references to parasols and a play on the phrase "mountains out of molehills".
Apparently not just a few of his elementary school children were capable of advanced abstract thought. Mr Kohl repeatedly writes "the students did ...", "the students wondered ...", "the students said ..." as if all the students in his class acted as one. None of his students seem to have had problems, and he gives no indication of how he might have helped individual students who might have had trouble with, say, the John von Neumann construction.
I was very disappointed with this book and felt somewhat insulted by it. It was long on advice but did not include believable evidence that Mr. Kohl's methods worked in his classroom. And there is no example of the theories working for any other teacher. I don't recommend that anyone who is looking for practical teaching advice buy this book.

a teacher and some he accounted while a teacher. If this book does not inspire you to teach or continue to teach then teaching is not the career for you. It will give you an emotional roller-coaster, but in the end you will want to start over. This book is going on my book shelf to pull out again in the future. Fantastic read!

Professional advice expressed through great writing

This is by far the best social media marketing related book that I have ever came across. I have been an internet marketer for years and it's how I make my primary income and I get sick and tired of finding social media books that are either completely useless, re-written information or are small in substance and number of pages. Thankfully, this book doesn't follow this negative trend and I now have some more hope in the Kindle marketplace.

The information is professional and well-researched. I have been in the game for years and even though I knew some of the advice, there is still plenty that I can only wish I knew years before - it would have saved me a lot of time and effort and I hope that it helps beginners in a way that I can only dream of. If you're looking to skip all of the nonsense and find a great social media book expressed by a clear, concise writing style that skips out all of the filler, then I highly suggest you check this out

Great Social Media Reference!

I had read another one of Tim Kitchen's books, How to Get to the Top of Google, and I was interested to see if this one would measure up. It was fantastic! I run three different websites, and each one is doing some things with social media, but the owners would like to do more. This book would appeal to businesses that are completely new to social media, as well as those who are already using it but need to delve in a little deeper. Full of concrete, helpful advice, the book gives examples of companies who are both doing it right and who are getting it wrong as far as social media, as well as exercises to help you develop your own plan. The book is divided into sections for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google+, and each section describes how to make the most of that particular media, along with things that could go wrong. As I read it, my mind was reeling with all of the possibilities, along with the opportunities we were missing by not implementing some of the book's ideas. The authors also offer a free social media audit to readers. Overall, this book is totally worth the purchase!

A definite read for a person just getting into social media. I've dealt with these sites on a limited basis and picked this book up to expand my knowledge about how social media marketing works. It definitely opened a few doors for me although it would definitely help a person just starting out because it goes into how to set up accounts, creating business pages, etc. Stuff I already knew.

About the Author

Jerry R. Thomas, EdD, is professor and dean of the College of Education at the University of North Texas. Besides writing the previous editions of this book, Thomas has authored more than 200 publications, 120 of which are refereed publications with numerous contributions in research methods. In 1999 he was named the C.H. McCloy Lecturer for his production of research throughout his career. Thomas has been editor in chief of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and a reviewer for most major research journals in kinesiology and numerous journals in psychology. He has also served as president of the National Academy of Kinesiology, American Kinesiology Association, AAHPERD Research Consortium, and North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. In 1990 he was named an AAHPERD Alliance Scholar and in 2003 was named a NASPSPA Distinguished Scholar based on lifetime achievement in research. Thomas received an honorary doctorate of science from his undergraduate institution, Furman University, in the spring of 2015.

Jack K. Nelson, EdD, is professor emeritus in the department of kinesiology at Louisiana State University. Nelson conducted and published research and taught research methods for 35 years. He has been an adviser on more than 50 doctoral dissertations and more than 50 master’s theses. He has more than 80 publications and has served as editor of research publications. A fellow in the Research Consortium, he has been a member of AAHPERD, the American Educational Research Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine. He has also served as president of the Association for Research, Administration, Professional Councils and Societies (now AAALF) and as vice president of AAHPERD.

Stephen Silverman, EdD, has taught and written about research methods for more than 30 years. He is a professor of education at Teachers College at Columbia University and has conducted research on teaching in physical education focusing on how children learn motor skill and develop attitudes. He has published more than 75 research articles in addition to many books and book chapters. Silverman is a fellow and past president of the National Academy of Kinesiology and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Research Consortium and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). A former coeditor of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and editor in chief of the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Silverman was an AERA Physical Education scholar lecturer, a Research Consortium scholar lecturer, and Weiss lecturer and Alliance Scholar for AAHPERD.
