Ralph’s pursuit of perfection is of such a high degree that it’s as much pain as pleasure. (Harold Koda New York Times Style Magazine, May 5, 2014)

A Rare Breed
By e russell book
Let's enter a world where the pursuit of perfection is crucial. A world that is inspired by an ancient ritural that honored a guest visiting one's home; a ritual of 331 steps used to make that guest a cup of fine tea: chado.
Like a prized geisha who reveals herself by removing one exquisite garment at a time, we observe Ralph Rucci as he exposes himself to us. We are with him from the time he awakens in his bedroom. We experience the excitement and exhaustion he must feel at the end of the runway. We walk with him and we will come to feel that we know him intimately. He is a modern, though ancient, man who has labored intensely and slowly, perfecting his craft and his eye.
When we slide this handsome book out of its linen bound slipcase, we open to a tour of his apartment - modest in size but filled with objects of precious quality; a personal repository of soul-full possessions, things, and images of people that nourish and inspire him. "Home is my sanctuary." And his becomes ours. We see it all room by room. We can read every title of every book that we see in every pile of them. We want to search for the ones that we do not already know.
We leave home and enter into the designer's workrooms. We are instantly reminded of those 331 steps when we see the painstaking details used in the garments molded by the hands of his cherished and devoted staff. We view the pages of his inspirational scrapbooks and browse his preparatory sketches and ideas. We become enlightened about fabrics, cutting, sewing, and ironing. Firsthand, we see how a fashion collection is really born. We begin to understand the great skill necessary to select just the right bead, just the right threads, just the right technique, that will turn a plain piece of silk tulle into a hand sewn sculpture that becomes art for the adornment of the body. And we too can applaud!
Though Mr. Rucci's is not what one would consider the usual type of autobiography, none the less, it is a voyeur's paradise of beautiful images that takes us straight to the heart of its subject and makes us feel that we have truly been in his company. The few paragraphs of text that he chooses to include support this feeling of shared intimacy.
So, yes, we should all consider this book.
Read it. Slowly. Deeply.
It transports us to a place of enlightened discovery. It shows us what is possible when we take the time to devote ourselves fully to whatever we may wish to pursue. It makes us see, and search for, the magic that might just lay undiscovered around us.
And what could be better than that?

Portrait of an Artist
By Maude Harker
Among Ralph Rucci's many accomplishments -- the second American since Mainbocher and the first in 60 years invited to show in Paris, a solo Fashion Institute of Art installation with a companion book, painting exhibitions and the subject of a soon to be released documentary -- is an elegant new cotton-clothbound, slip-cased volume, An Autobiography of a Fashion Designer: Ralph Rucci. Vis vis a mosaic of hundreds of images, this lushly dense, romantic and intimate portrait documents Mr. Rucci's chic home, office and workroom. In a hypnotically reductive pictorial format with minimal text, we see where and what Mr. Rucci reads, what he wears, what he drinks and eats. We learn about his prized possessions, including Tombley, his beloved dog. We see his notebooks, drawings, files, his schedule, his staff, workroom and his models wearing his glorious designs. We also get to read his thoughts, among them "it's all borrowed," which seems just a bit disingenuous because unveiled within these pages is something quite wonderfully new, innovative and original.
