Not Just a Pretty Face

My name is Shelley Ellis, and ever since I got a digital camera, I knew there was more I could do with it than just shoot pictures of pretty flowers. Then, I discovered the world of digital art. I was in awe, like seeing the works of Picasso or Dali for the first time. However, like those great artists, they seemed magical and unattainable...that is until I found Susan Tuttle's book, Digital Expressions.

Seriously, I am not at all exaggerating when I say that she combines the best of both of these worlds. Her book could simply be thumbed through and enjoyed by viewing the stunning digital art inside, but the best part is her clear and concise, step-by-step instructions so YOU can create your own piece of art based on the sample. And I truly do mean clear and understandable instructions. As a retired teacher, I know how to give instructions in small steps - so a 2nd grader can follow them - and Susan (a former teacher herself!) does an excellent job of foreseeing and explaining any trouble spots or questions that may come up along the way.

The first 20 pages of Digital Expressions are devoted to a review of how to use Photoshop Elements. Susan says it's not to be used as a replacement for the instruction manual...but, if you're like me, you probably never really took the time to actually read through the entire manual. Or if you did, after a while it all ran together. The first 20 pages in Digital Expressions made it all clear to me. I especially loved her yellow "Digital Detail" boxes where she highlights information or tips that come in particularly handy.

Oh! Just in case all of this isn't enough... Susan is generous enough to include a CD with the book loaded with images to get you started and help you along the way. I am so happy I bought this book. It's just exactly what I needed with 25 different project ideas such as: altering vintage photos, giving photos a hand tinted look, creating sweet realistic looking drawings, adding words to images, layers of backgrounds, photo montages....and so much more!

Author shows you how you can create ART WITH PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS!

The book is more inspirational in ideas than a very detailed book of projects.

I like this author a lot and she does provide instructions in her book.

I just wish it had more ideas for projects in it.

This will not deter me from getting any of her other books.

If you want to know what Photoshop Elements can do outside the realm of just fixing photos- this book is worth buying for that purpose.

YOU CAN CREATE ART with PSE- but most users are unaware of how to do that.
Tuttle shows exactly what you can do with some guidance and your own imagination.

Secrets Revealed

One hit wonder? Not a chance! Susan's second book on creating digital art and she's out done her first book in so many ways! Not only is her second book filled to the brim with detailed lesson after lesson, but the quality of the book itself is amazing. From the page design and layout to the quality of the paper. I can be a bit obsessive about how a book "feels" as well, and this is top notch.

Five chapters with 25 lessons in how to deconstruct the amazing pieces of art that I've admired in magazines and books for years. Being someone that has been intimidated with Photoshop & Photoshop Elements in the past, Susan has laid out step by step instructions that even the hesitant can appreciate. If it wasn't enough that the step by step instructions are simple to follow, she's included a CD full of photos and textures so you don't have to worry about having the "right" picture in your personal stash.

I know I'm gushing here, but I've always been in awe of these types of manipulated photographs and am now able to produce my own. Susan's teaching her secrets this Fall at Valley Ridge Art Studio ([...]) in Wisconsin and I cannot wait to meet her in person and dig deeper in to the art of digital art.

Not perfect, but very worthwhile and useful

I was looking for a book to help me bring my Vietnamese to the next level, and originally I had no intention of buying this one because of my bad experience with its predecessor, “Elementary Vietnamese.” However, besides the fact that it is the only resource I am aware of (except for “Contemporary Vietnamese Readings”) for learning Vietnamese at an advanced level, I have found that “Continuing Vietnamese” is a resource very much worth having and using, though there are many things in it that I wish were different. First, my criticisms:

1. This book repeats one of the main faults of its predecessor: piling on new vocabulary endlessly, and not reinforcing it. (On average, a language learner needs to see a new vocabulary item 15 times in order to retain it. Most items in this book, you will see once or twice and no more.)
2. There is 10 hours’ worth of audio on the accompanying CD-ROM, but it is distributed inefficiently. Grammar lessons are read-in English-on the CD, for some unaccountable reason. Dialogues are read only once, with no pauses for repetition.
3. The grammar explanations, while helpful, are far too sketchy, and examples are far too few, for the complexity of the drills and exercises. By lesson 3 I concluded that the aggravation of trying to figure out the exercises was doing more harm than good to my language study, so I decided to make my own exercises. (This also allows me to practice the new vocabulary often.) I think anyone studying this book independently, as I am, will have to use a bit of ingenuity to get a good learning experience from this book.

Now, the good parts:
1. The dialogues and readings are valuable practice in reading, speaking, and hearing authentic Vietnamese at an advanced level. (And this book is definitely advanced-it says “Early Intermediate,” but a book that teaches the words “feudal,” “mountain pass,” and “alluvium” in lesson one is not “early intermediate” by any stretch of the imagination!)
2. The book/CD package is priced very reasonably. Though I would have liked to see more audio practice on the CD, I am quite satisfied with what I got for my money.
3. This book avoids two faults of its predecessor: the obscure linguistic jargon is gone and there is more focus on things of general interest, such as Vietnamese poetry, economics, sports, history, and music.
4. This book lends itself fairly easily to letting you be your own professor, which you will have to do if you are studying independently! As I mentioned above, you can make your own exercises to practice the vocabulary items and the new grammar points, and this can even be fun. If you are studying this book independently, I suggest you do this and forget about trying to figure out the exercises in the book, which would probably wear down your enthusiasm!
5. Each chapter provides interesting cultural information and good things that anyone planning to visit or work in Vietnam should know.

My advice with this book is to be slow and thorough, review often, and if you are studying independently, find ways to make it fun for yourself. I’m glad I gave this book a chance, and I think any motivated advanced student of Vietnamese can use it with great profit.

This is the best intermediate Vietnamese text on the market. My teacher confirms that the language is accurate adn contemporary, unlike some of the other books on the market. Good mix of dialogues and grammar. Useful exercises.

About the Author

Simon Marlow has been a prominent figure in the Haskell community formany years. He is the author of large parts of the Glasgow HaskellCompiler, including in particular its highly regarded mulitcoreruntime system, along with many of the libraries and tools thatHaskell programmers take for granted. Simon also contributes to thefunctional programming research community, and has a string of paperson subjects ranging from garbage collection to language design. Inrecent years Simon's focus has been on making Haskell an idealprogramming language for parallel and concurrent applications, both bydeveloping new programming models and building a high-qualityimplementation.

Simon spent 14 years at Microsoft's Research laborotory in Cambridge,before taking a break in Spring 2013 to work on this book. Hecurrently works at Facebook UK.

The book is freely available on-line, so you can "try before you buy". But it is written by one of the two great Simons of Haskell, so you can safely "buy before you try", just like I did.

The book consists of two parts:
I) Parallelism. I enjoyed reading this part very much, because I have almost no experience in using multiple CPUs to speed up computations. Conclusion: with Haskell it is almost ridiculously easy, as compared to -say- MPI.
II) Concurrency. I have substantial of experience, in many languages, including Erlang. Well, concurrency is still hard, even with Haskell. It is definitely a virtue of the book, that it _does_not_pretend_otherwise_. But perhaps it is more manageable now, see for yourself.

For me, this book was the final argument that Haskell has matured to be (probably the most) versatile tool for software development.

The Book for Par/Conc. Programming in Haskell

Disclaimer: I'm reviewing this book under the O'Reilly Blogger Review program. (though I ended up purchasing a hard copy afterwards any way.)

This is The Book that sold me on Haskell for concurrent and parallel programming. Sure, I've read several articles on the benefits of functional languages for programming in the multi-core world, but that didn't really sink in until I saw how elegant it could be in a functional language.

In brief, the main benefits I got from reading this this book were:

* Surveyed parallel programming (in Haskell)
* Surveyed concurrent programming (in Haskell)
* Saw the elegance of the approaches for myself
* Learned about laziness gotchas in parallel contexts
* Learned a bit about what's next and left to improve
* Learned what modules to turn to and watch when in need

I hope I never have to look at OpenCL or CUDA C++ again for parallel programming. The way Repa/Accelerate handles this is beautiful.

The chapters on concurrent programming showed me how much having concurrency primitives built into a language change async programming. Having forkIO to run subsequent computations and a scheduler in the run-time make it very convenient.

In sum, I highly recommend this book. 10/10, one of my top 10 books of 2013.

For Kindle readers: the code samples display wonderfully. No need to squint - the fonts were well chosen.

A must-have for any "real world" Haskell programmers

This book is short, very clear and covers lots of ground.

As stated by the author in the preface, you can get most out of the book if you already know how to write functional Haskell programs and how to use monads, etc. Then the first part of the book will teach you how to make your pure codes run extremely fast (and it is really easy to do so in Haskell), whereas the second part of the book will teach you how to structure the pieces of your programs together to form a real world application.

For those who still do not have the prerequisites to benefit most from the book, I think a good place to start would be the book Real World Haskell (which is already a bit dated). The current book treats the topics of chapters 24, 28 and parts of chapter 25 of Real World Haskell in much more details, with lots of modern additions.

Goldratt attacks sales, marketing, and segmentation

It's Not Luck is the follow up to the Goal. Written in the form of a Novel, it examines different value perceptions of the market. You'll learn about ultra variable costing, utilizing excess capacity to serve seemingly unprofitable market segments, and how to break down barriers to achieve new avenues to profitability. Priceline is a perfect example of an entire company built on exploiting constraints in the marketplace, and wringing every last bit of revenue (maybe one day profitably) out of previously unused capacity.
The book provides a brief introduction to the Thinking Processes, which are used to examine conflicting logical arguments, and develop a workable solution, satisfactory to both sides. Within the book, the methodology of the Thinking Processes is applied to both business dilemmas, and to that of parent/teenager relationships. It's all about building understanding between people with differing perspectives, and the variety of situations to which it is applied clearly illustrates the versatility of Goldratt's methods.
If you found "The Goal" valuable, you'll like this one, though w/o Jeff Cox, the writing isn't quite as good as the Goal. To continue your journey into the world of TOC and the TP (Theory of Constraints and Thinking Processes) look for books by H. William Dettmer. No novel formats in Dettmer's books, that I've read, but much more thorough explanation of TOC.

Luck Is for Rabbits

Goldratt has been an especially prolific author in recent years. This is the second of three books; the others are The Goal (1992) and Critical Chain (1997). In The Goal, Goldratt's primary focus is on the a-pplications of what he calls a Theory of Constraints (TOC) to the manufacturing process. In that book and in this one, he presents his ideas in the form of fiction (as a novel), complete with a cast of characters, a multi-dimensional narrative (or plot), a variety of settings, and perhaps most important of all, a series of conflicts. Few other authors with sufficient business acumen would attempt, much less succeed (as Goldratt does) in combining the two genres. Long ago, someone suggested that luck is the residue of preparation. Goldratt seems to agree. In this volume, he devotes much of his attention to demonstrating the relevance of TOC to marketing, sales, inventory control, distribution channels, strategic alliances, and conflict resolution. I believe it was Carl Rogers who suggested that one of the most effective strategies for conflict resolution is to set aside all points on which both parties agree, each party then makes whatever concessions are appropriate (i.e. terms and conditions of lesser importance); thereby, the parties involved can then concentrate on what are, for both sides, the most important differences. And do so with mutual respect and with goodwill. Goldratt applies the "Rogerian Model" to countless situations in this book, suggesting that conflict resolution is the result of sustained effort and patience, not luck.
It is occasionally said of an especially well-written business book that "it reads like a novel." What we have here IS a novel. Never before have executives had more to read and less time for reading. One of this book's most appealing qualities is that it is so easy to read. (The challenge is to make effective applications of TOC in an increasingly more competitive marketplace.) Goldratt is an authority on the business subjects he discusses as well as an excellent teller of tales. That's a rare combination.
For whom will this book have greatest value? Obviously, decision-makers who now have one or more of the following needs: to set or re-set the direction of their organization; to formulate appropriate marketing and sales strategies; to improve production, logistics, and distribution; to launch or improve project management initiatives; and/or to strengthen the skills of line managers.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to read Goldratt's other books, The Goal and Critical Chain; also, to check out David Maister's Practice What You Preach and David Whyte's The Heart Aroused. With all due respect to the core concepts Goldratt examines in this volume, they are worthless unless and until embraced by everyone involved. Master and Whyte can help managers to achieve that "buy in."

Great human relations techniques!

While I enjoyed "The Goal", Goldratt's latest, "It's Not Luck" was hard to put down! Alex Rogo saved the day again, or more specifically saved his companies again, and once again Goldratt told his story in a manner that mixed fiction with solid business and human-relations principles. I am a marketing and business consultant, and after reading this book, I immediately declared it required reading for the executives and key-man employees of each company I am working with. Without exception it met with rave reviews. One of the managers, wife and half-owner of a manufacturing facility, made some major changes in company policies and used the techniques in this book to present these changes to the employees of the company. The rationale behind every single change was easily understood by even the most under-educated employee, and met with virtually no resistance! Revenues the following month increased by 150% and everyone employed by this company felt more rewarded, and more prideful, by their own contribution to the production process than ever before. Needless to say, this company rewarded me with a liberal bonus just for introducing them to this book! On the homefront, I have found several opportunities to use Alex Rogo's techniques to negotiate conflicts with my children, to the mutual satisfaction of all: a rarity indeed

A Refreshing Book

I can't think of too many books I've enjoyed reading as much as The Rest of God. I am not even talking about the content but just the book. I know nothing about the author, Mark Buchanan, beyond what he reveals within the book. I haven't Googled his name and did not read the fancy little printout the publisher sent along with the book. What I do know is that this guy can write. Publishers Weekly says "His prose is fresh and immediate, earnest and self-effacing at the same time." I couldn't agree more. His prose is poetic. It is a joy to read.

But of course the actual writing is only one component of a book and, to be honest, a component that is of lesser importance. Of far more importance is the content. I'm glad to say that, on the whole, I found this a compelling and challenging book. Buchanan argues that as Christians we have lost "the rest of God--the rest God bestows." "In a culture where busyness is a fetish and stillness is laziness, rest is sloth." Our culture expects us to work constantly. But God provides us rest in the Sabbath. "Sabbath is both a day and an attitude to nurture such stillness. It is both a time on the calendar and a disposition of the heart. It is a day we enter, but just as much a way we see. Sabbath imparts the rest of God--the things of God's nature and presence we miss in our busyness." The purpose of this book is "to convince you, in part, that setting apart an entire day, one our of seven, for feasting and resting and worship and play is a gift and not a burden, and neglecting the gift too long will make your soul, like soil never left fallow, hard and dry and spent." He seeks to help Christians understand the importance of developing not just the desire to maintain a Sabbath day but also develop a Sabbath heart.

So how do we do this? Well, that is the subject of the book's fourteen chapters. Each chapter concludes with a brief "liturgy," a chance for the reader to practically apply what he has learned. Buchanan begins by setting out a theology of work. He teaches that, because of the fall, some level of discontent with our jobs is inevitable. God made it that way. "In order to keep the Sabbath well--to embrace the rest of God--we need a right view of work. Without a rich theology of labor, we'll have an impoverished theology of rest. We'll find that both are hectic, sporadic, chaotic. We'll find no joy in either."

Sabbath is not a day for mere leisure, which is what Sabbath becomes when we no longer know how to santify time. "Leisure is Sabbath bereft of the sacred." Buchanan teaches that there are two Greek words which we translate as "time" in English. The first refers to the time of clock and calendar. This is time in a profane, cold sense. It is the endless, inevitable march of seconds, minutes, hours, days. The second refers to time as an opportunity, as a gift. This is time in the sacred sense, time which has been entrusted to us by God. It is time that must be sanctified on the Sabbath. Sabbath-keeping requires two orientations. One of these is Godward and the other timeward. "To keep Sabbath well--as both a day and an attitude--we have to think clearly about God and freshly about time. We likely, at some level, need to change our minds about both. Unless we trust God's sovereignty, we won't dare risk Sabbath. And unless we receive time as abundance and gift, not as ration and burden, we'll never develop a capacity to savor Sabbath." Our trust in God's sovereignty allows us to take a day in which we cease from all that we need to do and instead focus on feasting, resting, worship and play--those things we rarely make time for on the other six days.

So what does Sabbath look like? What can we do on the Sabbath? Buchanan points out that, while God spared no detail in describing Old Testament dietary laws, laws regarding hygiene and laws regarding sacrifices, He provided only a bare outline of Sabbath-keeping. Buchanan does the same. He warns against legalism which, despite its complexity, is mindless, requiring little or no personal engagement. Legalism is "sheer mechanics, simple arithmetic, no more difficult than cranking a hoist or measuring a length of board. You just follow orders." "Sabbath-keeping is grounded in a stark refusal we make to ourselves. We stand ourselves down. We resist that which six days of coming and going, pushing and pulling, dodging and weaving, fighting and defending have bred into us. What we deny ourselves is our well-trained impulses to get and to spend and to make and to master. This day, we go in a direction we're unaccustomed to, unfamiliar with, that the other six days have made seem unnatural to us." If the grass needs to be cut because you did not have a chance to do it on Saturday and you have a busy week approaching, leave the grass. But if the grass needs to be cut and this is one of your favorite, most relaxing chores, than by all means, cut the grass on the Sabbath.

The book isn't all good. Buchanan quotes a few of the usual suspects we might expect in a book dealing with this type of subject matter: Henri Nouwen and Brother Lawrence among them. He has a chapter on listening to God which should have been left out as it contributes very little to the book and introduces the flawed concept of prayer as communication from God rather than prayer as communication to God. Some of his biblical interpretation is a mite suspect and I wasn't quite able to figure out his theology of Eucharist or Lord's Supper. But I still found this a tremendously enjoyable book and one that dealt a fresh perspective on an old, old issue. Buchanan paid scant attention to the standard arguments for and against Sabbath, opting instead to show that it is a human necessity and that Sabbath can become a time of unparalleled joy, beauty and rest if only we will slow down long enough to enjoy it. It challenged me and has given me much food for further research and meditation.

I still don't know who this Buchanan guy is, but I am going to have to track down his other books. If they are anything like The Rest of God I'm sure I will enjoy reading them, even if only for the experience.

"Guerra Contra Todos Los Puertorrique�os" toc� mi coraz�n y me conmovi� cuando le� la edici�n en ingl�s. Ahora la versi�n en espa�ol me deja sin palabras porque si en ingl�s es impactante, en mi propio idioma lo es mucho m�s. Fascina la humanizaci�n de la figura de Don Pedro Albizu Campos.

Aunque ya conoc�a muchos de los hechos, la pasi�n conque Nelson Denis narra los sucesos le da a este libro una frescura y dinamismo que no hab�a encontrado en ning�n otro libro sobre el tema. El libro te agarra y no te suelta. Te transporta en tiempo y lugar, arrojando luz y brindando un entendimiento especial a hechos vividos. Y mientras el tel�n se va levantando para revelar lo nuevo, lo ya conocido parece nuevo tambi�n, debido al estilo y una perspectiva de autor nueva y refrescante.

La informaci�n que Denis incluye en el libro, obtenida a trav�s de los documentos desclasificados, no tiene precio.

Yo viv� parte de esa historia. Recuerdo, de ni�a, la ley de la Mordaza, y vivo siempre consciente de los estragos y sufrimientos que caus�, y de c�mo nos afecta todav�a a todos los puertorrique�os. Viv� la persecuci�n contra el independentismo, pues como estudiante universitaria sufr� "carpeteo", persecuci�n, acoso, amenazas, y la fabricaci�n de casos, por ser parte del movimiento pro independencia en Puerto Rico. Me alegra mucho que se haya escrito este libro.

"Guerra Contra Todos Los Puertorrique�os" es un libro honesto y fascinante, que no oculta nada, sobre una parte de la historia de Puerto Rico que hac�a tiempo no se tocaba. Un libro necesario en la educaci�n en Puerto Rico, especialmente para la juventud, y que todos los puertorrique�os deben leer. Un libro de gran inter�s y valor para personas de todas las nacionalidades.

Very few books have made me angry. This one's one of them. Now I need to keep reading to learn more about this dark chapter in our island's past.

Regardless of whether you're from Puerto Rico or not, you should read this book. Period.

Questionable Value

This is a short introduction to leather-working. After purchasing it, I found that simply watching YouTube videos and reading free information gave me much more information than this ebook. I was hoping for more illustration. You will be disappointed if you are any degree of visual learner.

The only upside to this is possibly taking it with me to a leathercraft store (assuming I remember my kindle).

Summary: if you already have an introductory leatherworking book, or are comfortable perusing the internet, skip this book.

Great Leather Craft Book - How to Work Leather

This hobby has fascinated me since I was in the Scouts, years ago. But I'm a newbie in working with leather. This book gave me some great ideas, with step by step instruction. It really covers the whole process from buying leather to tooling, stitching and making projects. I'm looking forward to putting this teaching to work. I'm glad I found this to help me out.
