Dr. Binh Nhu Ngo is the Director of the Vietnamese Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and has been teaching Vietnamese there since 1992.

Not perfect, but very worthwhile and useful

I was looking for a book to help me bring my Vietnamese to the next level, and originally I had no intention of buying this one because of my bad experience with its predecessor, “Elementary Vietnamese.” However, besides the fact that it is the only resource I am aware of (except for “Contemporary Vietnamese Readings”) for learning Vietnamese at an advanced level, I have found that “Continuing Vietnamese” is a resource very much worth having and using, though there are many things in it that I wish were different. First, my criticisms:
1. This book repeats one of the main faults of its predecessor: piling on new vocabulary endlessly, and not reinforcing it. (On average, a language learner needs to see a new vocabulary item 15 times in order to retain it. Most items in this book, you will see once or twice and no more.)
2. There is 10 hours’ worth of audio on the accompanying CD-ROM, but it is distributed inefficiently. Grammar lessons are read-in English-on the CD, for some unaccountable reason. Dialogues are read only once, with no pauses for repetition.
3. The grammar explanations, while helpful, are far too sketchy, and examples are far too few, for the complexity of the drills and exercises. By lesson 3 I concluded that the aggravation of trying to figure out the exercises was doing more harm than good to my language study, so I decided to make my own exercises. (This also allows me to practice the new vocabulary often.) I think anyone studying this book independently, as I am, will have to use a bit of ingenuity to get a good learning experience from this book.
Now, the good parts:
1. The dialogues and readings are valuable practice in reading, speaking, and hearing authentic Vietnamese at an advanced level. (And this book is definitely advanced-it says “Early Intermediate,” but a book that teaches the words “feudal,” “mountain pass,” and “alluvium” in lesson one is not “early intermediate” by any stretch of the imagination!)
2. The book/CD package is priced very reasonably. Though I would have liked to see more audio practice on the CD, I am quite satisfied with what I got for my money.
3. This book avoids two faults of its predecessor: the obscure linguistic jargon is gone and there is more focus on things of general interest, such as Vietnamese poetry, economics, sports, history, and music.
4. This book lends itself fairly easily to letting you be your own professor, which you will have to do if you are studying independently! As I mentioned above, you can make your own exercises to practice the vocabulary items and the new grammar points, and this can even be fun. If you are studying this book independently, I suggest you do this and forget about trying to figure out the exercises in the book, which would probably wear down your enthusiasm!
5. Each chapter provides interesting cultural information and good things that anyone planning to visit or work in Vietnam should know.
My advice with this book is to be slow and thorough, review often, and if you are studying independently, find ways to make it fun for yourself. I’m glad I gave this book a chance, and I think any motivated advanced student of Vietnamese can use it with great profit.

Excellent text

This is the best intermediate Vietnamese text on the market. My teacher confirms that the language is accurate adn contemporary, unlike some of the other books on the market. Good mix of dialogues and grammar. Useful exercises.

THIS BOOK IS BETTER TTHAN THE FIRST ONE BECAUSE IT COMES WITH A CD ROM, WISH IT COULD HAVE COVERED MORE TOPICS- LIKE EVERYDAY CONVERSATION. THIS BOOK IS MORE FOR VIETNAMESE AMERICANS THAN SOMEONE STUDYING VIETNAMESE FOR THE 2ND SEMESTER IT WILL BE QUITE DIFFICULT. VERY GOOD BOOK THOUGH COMPARED TO OTHER ONES
